Internationally recognized plant pathologist Dr. Don Huber has found some things that we should really be concerned about, and they concern GMOs. He has spoken out about it, but the federal government isn’t listening yet.
Dr. Huber “wrote a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack warning of the discovery of a new pathogen and a possible link between Roundup Ready® (GMO) corn and soybeans and severe reproductive problems in livestock as well as widespread crop failure” in January.
The Obama administration didn’t seem to note the concern at all and decided to approve two new Roundup Ready® GMO crops just a few weeks later (also essentially ignoring previous court orders on this matter).
Concerning much? Yeah.
The good thing is, Food Democracy Now has picked up this story and created a petition to Secretary Vilsack to stop these new GMO crops from being planted until more research is conducted on this matter (and finds, counter to initial findings, that Roundup Ready® GMO crops are actually safe).
Who is Dr. Huber?
Curious to learn a little more about Dr. Huber. Here’s a bit on him from Food Democracy Now:
For 50 years, he’s been a scientist studying plant diseases in the U.S. and around the world and spent 35 years at Purdue University as Professor Emeritus of plant pathology.
He has a 41-year military career as a retired Colonel, evaluating natural and manmade biological threats, including germ warfare and disease outbreaks.
He coordinates the “Emergent Diseases and Pathogens Committee” as part of the USDA National Plant Disease Recovery System under Homeland Security.
You can learn much more about Dr. Huber and his and others’ research over on Food Democracy Now (there’s more text on these issues and a handful of videos), and you can sign the petition to Secretary Vilsack, too.
