BPA is a great concern to many people these days, and for good reason. BPA is a hormone disruptor that can considerably harm one’s health. BPA has been linked to endocrine disruption in animals and in some human studies (see links on the bottom for more on that). How to avoid BPA? Take a look…
Texas’ Worst Drought in 44 Years Driving Food Prices Up
In January, February, and March, I discussed the link between climate change and rising food prices. Well, there was big news out of Texas recently bringing us back to that topic yet again. Texas is experiencing its worst drought in 44 years and it is damaging the state’s wheat crop. This is driving up the price of wheat and meat (ranchers have had to reduce the size of their herds).
Innovative Twitter Campaign to Help Save Endangered Species
The new Congress seems to be spending too much time drinking Tea and not catching up on the latest science (or it is just gets all its science information from the fossil fuel industry). It has launched a full out attack on science and the environment. The Endangered Species Act and certain iconic species haven’t been spared.
Martha Stewart’s Vegan Show with Twitter’s Biz Stone, Farm Sanctuary’s Gene Baur, & Veganist’s Kathy Freston
Following Oprah’s lead, Martha Stewart had an hour-long all-vegan show this week.
Farm Sanctuary is an amazing organization that I would give a ton of props to. And, news to me, the organization apparently convinced Twitter co-founder Biz Stone to go vegan. Martha Stewart had both Biz Stone and Farm Sanctuary’s co-founder and president Gene Baur on the show, as well as Kathy Freston, author of the Veganist (who was also on the Oprah vegan show and helped lead the Harpo staff of 378 on a one week vegan challenge).
European Countries May Soon Not Be Able to Ban GMOs

Los Angeles Could Easily be a Solar-Powered City
UCLA’s Luskin Center has created a “Los Angeles Solar Atlas” showing the solar potential in Los Angeles County on a variety of different scales. It created solar maps for each city and zone in the county and for the jurisdiction of each of the county’s 7 utilities, as well as for the county as a whole.
Food Prices Rising Fast in U.S., More to Come?
I wrote last week that we should probably cover the link between food and broader issues a little more here on Eat Drink Better. With a nudge from our site director, Becky Striepe, and network founder/publisher, David Anderson, I’ve decided to cover the complicated but important topic of rising food prices today.
The LA Times had a decent piece on this topic recently that included a number of interesting food statistics. What of the following did you know?
