How can the city government make you happier? Perhaps by planting more trees. Perhaps by creating more parks and bike paths. Perhaps by broadcasting bird songs.. this is what one city might start doing with that specific goal in mind. It will be done on a main drag in Lancaster (California), Lancaster Boulevard. Scientific studies have shown that listening to bird songs makes people happier, and the mayor there thought the idea of playing “bird chatter” from large speakers would improve the quality of life of the city. Mayor Rex Parris “is known for his flamboyant ideas,” CBS Los Angeles reports. “He got a law passed giving the city the right to castrate pit bulls, ordered city officials to learn Mandarin in a bid to woo Chinese business, and riled some people by saying he was growing Lancaster into a Christian community.”
Truthfully, I don’t think this idea is bad. It is probably very cheap and sounds like it would be nice (if well done). Of course, would probably be nicer if the city attracted more real birds there with more trees and parks, but that’s so 1990s. š
