I wrote about a pretty awesome (though, disturbing) interactive factory farming map created by Food & Water Watch and New Signature back in December. The map “illustrates the geographic shift in where and how food is raised in the U.S. and allows anyone to quickly search for the highest concentration of animals by region, state and county.” A non-interactive version of it is above.
Drought Continues and Grows in Texas, Oklahoma & Kansas — Wheat Suffering
The tremendous drought in Texas and the Southwest that I wrote about in early April continues on (almost 50% of Texas is experience “exceptional” drought now, the highest level of drought — “unprecedented” according to experts). Furthermore, it has expanded and is affecting even more important U.S. farming areas.
Toxin from GM Crops Found in Human Blood, Canadian Scientists Find
When you let the GMO industry police itself and evaluate the safety of its own products, you are bound to get something different than if you had (or let) independent scientists do so. I’ve covered the scientific limitations of GMO studies commissioned or conducted by the GMO industry before, as well as 13 scientific studies that have identified a link between GMOs and organ disruption. News is out now that may be even more disturbing.
Greenwashing Genetically Modified Crops
One of the biggest weapons in GMO companies’ arsenal is the claim they make repeatedly that genetically modified (GM) crops are needed to help feed to world in the face of global climate change. There’s one problem with this claim, though — it’s total greenwashing and untrue.
Food Security & Global Weirding
Now, this didn’t hit me until recently, but if you don’t follow climate science closely (or much at all), you may have a hard time making the connection between climate change (or global weirding) and food security or food prices.
Organic Fruit & Veggie House! (Cool)
I just ran across this on a friend’s site. So cool, and useful.
It’s a modular house made of fruits and veggies planted in (of course) plastic crates. They are put on top of scaffolding made into the shape of a house. The house lives during the summer and then is taken down and rebuilt in another location the next year. The name: Eathouse.
The Sea Around Us Giveaway Winner is…
The day before Earth Day, we announced the release of some of Rachel Carson’s classics as e-books (Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us, and A Sense of Wonder), as well as an opportunity to win one of them, The Sea Around Us. I’ve just selected the winner using Random.org, and it is…
F***ed Up: USDA Lets GMO Companies (e.g. Monsanto) Perform Own Environmental Impact Studies
The USDA continues to ignore the message and ruling of the court and makes it easier for GM crops (like Monsanto’s GM sugar beets) to be approved and planted without true government oversight.
NYC Next to Ban Toys in Unhealthy Fast Food Meals (i.e. Happy Meals)?
If you’ve been a regular reader of Eat Drink Better, you know that we covered the San Francisco Happy Meal toy ban pretty extensively. And in December, I wrote a story titled “More Happy Meal Toy Bans on the Way?” in response to some push in Wisconsin to enact a similar ban.
Well, now, a little city in the Northeast that sometimes goes by the nickname “the Big Apple” is looking at implementing a similar ban as well. Yeah, you may have heard of this place, officially called New York City (formerly New Amsterdam).
How to Join the No-to-GMOs Movement
Following up on my post yesterday on the horrible but not at all surprising news that 13 scientific studies have linked GMOs to organ disruption, as promised, here’s a little more info on how to get involved in the citizen movement against GMOs.
