A newly published 10-year study by Dutch researchers found that people who ate a lot of white-fleshed fruits and vegetables, like apples and pears, had a 52% lower risk of stroke.
Apple Juice Arsenic Different Form than OTHER Arsenic
A couple months ago, I wrote a story on arsenic in apple juice. This was the gist of it:
While the EPA limits arsenic in our drinking water to 10 parts per billion, recent tests have found the amount of arsenic in apple juice (Mott’s Apple Juice, in particular) to be 55 parts per billion — 5.5 times more than what the EPA will let us drink!
Bill Clinton’s CNN Vegan Interview
It’s Bill Clinton’s 65th Birthday today. And as I previewed, a feature interview on him and his vegan diet was on CNN last night. I’m having trouble finding the full piece (I’ll update this if I do). Above is the only video I can find on CNN so far, a preview to the show, “The Last Heart Attack.” And here’s a 9-minute video of coverage from around, of that interview and others
Plastic in Our Oceans, & How to Keep it Out {Infographic}
Plastic oceans. Sea creatures full of plastic. This is a reality today. Tons and tons of plastic now live in the oceans of the world. There’s a Great Pacific Garbage Patch and a Great Atlantic Garbage Patch and many other garbage patches now. And, sadly, they grow every day, because we continue to produce amounts of plastic that are hard to even comprehend.
New Weight Study… Which Foods Make You Fat?
I’m not all that interested in weight, to be quite honest. If anything, I need to put on weight. But some recent news on weight gain caught my attention. A new study, Changes in Diet and Lifestyle and Long-Term Weight Gain in Women and Men, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, has found that the food you eat may be even more important than the quantity of food you eat when it comes to weight gain…
Dark Chocolate Health Benefits
I love dark chocolate, and I’ve heard it’s good for you (or, at least, not bad for you) but I had never really looked into how much nutrition, what kind of nutrition, or what kind of other health benefits it offered. (I just assumed people were telling me the truth and didn’t concern myself too much with the matter — I eat it when I feel like it.) However, today, I have decided to look into the matter (yes, to write this post). After grabbing a little dark chocolate my partner brought me from the Czech Republic recently and sitting down to research the matter, I have to say that what I’ve found is pretty impressive…
Factory Farming Map Wins Interactive Media Award (Acceptance Speech Cut Off)
I wrote about a pretty awesome (though, disturbing) interactive factory farming map created by Food & Water Watch and New Signature back in December. The map “illustrates the geographic shift in where and how food is raised in the U.S. and allows anyone to quickly search for the highest concentration of animals by region, state and county.” A non-interactive version of it is above.
Toxin from GM Crops Found in Human Blood, Canadian Scientists Find
When you let the GMO industry police itself and evaluate the safety of its own products, you are bound to get something different than if you had (or let) independent scientists do so. I’ve covered the scientific limitations of GMO studies commissioned or conducted by the GMO industry before, as well as 13 scientific studies that have identified a link between GMOs and organ disruption. News is out now that may be even more disturbing.
BPA Cover-up? 4 Authors of “No Noteworthy Risk” BPA Report Tied to BPA Industry
Yeah, this is the kind of report our government should use to say that BPA is safe, one with four authors who have ties to the chemical industry or companies/groups that help manufacture or promote BPA.
Horizon Organic Milk Claims Misleading Customers?
Horizon Organic Milk is marketed by White Wave, which is a division of Dean’s Foods. It is the largest organic milk bottler and the largest dairy conglomerate in the United States. The Cornucopia Institute filed a formal request with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last week “asking for an investigation into Dean Foods’ advertisements for its Horizon milk with Omega-3 DHA.” The Cornucopia Institute believes that Horizon Organic Milk’s nutritional benefits are being overstated.
