The day before Earth Day, we announced the release of some of Rachel Carson’s classics as e-books (Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us, and A Sense of Wonder), as well as an opportunity to win one of them, The Sea Around Us. I’ve just selected the winner using Random.org, and it is…
F***ed Up: USDA Lets GMO Companies (e.g. Monsanto) Perform Own Environmental Impact Studies
The USDA continues to ignore the message and ruling of the court and makes it easier for GM crops (like Monsanto’s GM sugar beets) to be approved and planted without true government oversight.
Horizon Organic Milk Claims Misleading Customers?
Horizon Organic Milk is marketed by White Wave, which is a division of Dean’s Foods. It is the largest organic milk bottler and the largest dairy conglomerate in the United States. The Cornucopia Institute filed a formal request with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last week “asking for an investigation into Dean Foods’ advertisements for its Horizon milk with Omega-3 DHA.” The Cornucopia Institute believes that Horizon Organic Milk’s nutritional benefits are being overstated.
Earth Day, & Why I Do What I Do
Earth Day… Earth Day, Earth Day. What to say today? I spend most of the day every day writing about environmental issues and solutions to them. So many hours every day, and every week and month and year.
Why do I do it?
Nets Going Green; Not To Playoffs
I used to be a huge basketball fan. Well, I still am, but I just don’t have the time or opportunity to watch it much anymore. But one thing I have had the time to learn about is how a number of basketball teams are “going green” — working to help the environment in one way or another.

Mike Tyson on His Vegan Diet: “I wish I was born this way.” [VIDEO]
Last August, I wrote about Mike Tyson’s transformation to veganism. At the time, he had been vegan for 8 months. While he was very enthusiastic about the diet and said he felt great (“I get these explosions of energy. I don’t know how long they last, but they’re like explosions. So powerful.”), I’m sure I wasn’t the only one wondering if he would stick to it.
NYC Next to Ban Toys in Unhealthy Fast Food Meals (i.e. Happy Meals)?
If you’ve been a regular reader of Eat Drink Better, you know that we covered the San Francisco Happy Meal toy ban pretty extensively. And in December, I wrote a story titled “More Happy Meal Toy Bans on the Way?” in response to some push in Wisconsin to enact a similar ban.
Well, now, a little city in the Northeast that sometimes goes by the nickname “the Big Apple” is looking at implementing a similar ban as well. Yeah, you may have heard of this place, officially called New York City (formerly New Amsterdam).
How to Join the No-to-GMOs Movement
Following up on my post yesterday on the horrible but not at all surprising news that 13 scientific studies have linked GMOs to organ disruption, as promised, here’s a little more info on how to get involved in the citizen movement against GMOs.
GMOs Linked to Organ Disruption in 13 Scientific Studies
Yeah, if you haven’t worried about GMOs up until now, that headline might have you doing so. Unfortunately, it’s true.
A new review of the scientific literature on GMOs published in the journal Environmental Sciences Europe reports that numerous scientific studies have found a link between the most common GMOs (in particular, GM corn and soybeans) and severe organ problems in rats and mice. Data from several independent studies “indicate liver and kidney problems as end points of GMO diet effects,” the authors write.
