“If you want to understand all that is wrong with our government’s environmental safety priorities, you need only look at the sad story of the weed killer atrazine. Despite the fact that study after study has demonstrated its dangers, it…
Apple Juice Arsenic Different Form than OTHER Arsenic
A couple months ago, I wrote a story on arsenic in apple juice. This was the gist of it:
While the EPA limits arsenic in our drinking water to 10 parts per billion, recent tests have found the amount of arsenic in apple juice (Mott’s Apple Juice, in particular) to be 55 parts per billion — 5.5 times more than what the EPA will let us drink!
Spirulina: How to Eat It (4 Spirulina Recipes)
Spirulina was a staple food for me growing up. My mom gave it to me for an energy boost before soccer games, especially. So, it’s sort of a normal condiment for me. But, for most, it is still a rather foreign and mysterious food. This hit me recently when a friend mentioned it and was having trouble figuring out how to eat it. So, I thought I’d write up a quick post on ways I like to eat it.
What is in Orange Juice? Not What You Think
Orange juice is just orange juice, right? That “100% juice, not made from concentrate,” Tropicana or Florida orange juice stuff, I mean. Well, no… I’ll give you a warning, though, if you love it and nothing’s going to make you stop drinking it anyway, you may not want to read on, ’cause this is gonna get nasty….
How To: Smoothies
We got on a huge smoothie kick this summer. We discovered that a dinky little blender of ours could actually make them and were making smoothies every day for a week or two. Now, while smoothies are a delicious, special treat, they are not at all difficult to make. However, if you’ve never made one before, you may not believe me. So, I’m writing this short little post (photos included) to tell you how to make smoothies (or, at least, how I like to make them) and to let you know about one of my favorite recipes.
Arsenic in Your Apple Juice? Probably..
While the EPA limits arsenic in our drinking water to 10 parts per billion, recent tests* have found the amount of arsenic in apple juice (Mott’s Apple Juice, in particular) to be 5.5 parts per billion — 5.5 times more than what the EPA will let us drink! The FDA does not regulate arsenic in juice at all, unfortunately. However, as a result of this finding and recent research it has conducted on food imports in the U.S., Food & Water Watch is pushing the government agency to start doing so.
Summer Solstice: Enjoy a Picnic in the Park, Life, Smoothies, & ..
It’s the summer solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere) today, meaning it’s the longest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, of course, it’s the opposite (the winter solstice, or shortest day of the year). Now, I thought rather than write my typical news story, I’d do something a little different today.
Kids’ Lemonade Stand Shut Down by County Government..
This is a crazy story. Another one of these “overreaching government” stories that seem to be all the rage (for good reason). Before I get into it, I’ll note that a $500 fine imposed on the children in this story has been waived and the kids have been granted permission to re-open their lemonade stand. But before someone in power came to their senses and decided that they didn’t want to whole nation looking at them for such a ridiculous action. (I’ll also note that these are kids of some very rich, “Washington power” families, the Marriotts (yeah, the the family behind the hotels) and the Augustines (of Lockheed-Martin). Anyway, here’s the story….
Organic Milk is Better for You, European Study Finds
New study out of the UK finds that organic milk is considerably better for you than non-organic milk, & actually recommends going organic.
Rocket Fuel in Your Water?
A “potent thyroid toxin” that is a component of rocket fuel, perchlorate, contaminates the drinking water of up to 17 million Americans in 26 states. The EPA is finally going to start regulating it.
